Installation

Before we even begin speaking about the installation of OSX86 on your machine, we need to be clear on a very important point. The current intel releases of OSX86, only support SSE2 or SSE3 processors. Although this does cover most of the processors on today’s market, you should check. To do this, Use cpu-z, CrystalCPUID, wcpuid, or ‘cat /proc/cpuinfo’ if you’re in Linux.

Now, let’s talk about partitioning! The easiest way, I’ve found, is to boot up into any nice live linux CD, and fire up “cfdisk”. Create a partition of type “AF” and make sure it’s over 6 GB‘s. This is where you will actually be installing OSX. Cfdisk might give you some DOS 6.x errors, ignore these as they are of no consequence to you.

Once you have your partition (it can be anywhere), it’s time to get your hands on the install media. This process is not covered on this guide, and you will have to do so as part of your free will. Once you have the installation media, (I suggest 10.4.4 or up) simply place the DVD in your drive and reboot. The OSX installer should pop up without a problem. Leave the apple screen up for a while, the entire installation is Live, the only time files are copied to the hard drive is when the OS is finally being installed.

Agree to all the terms etc. and you should reach to a screen asking you where it should install OSX. If you’re lucky, you will see the partition you created right there! If not, on the finder bar, click on utilities and open up the disk partitioning app. Look for the partition you created earlier, and re-format it as an apple partition with journaling. Now you should see that partition appear as one of the selectable install partitions. Click on it! Next it will ask you about packages you might want to install. Its up to you, but I wouldn’t suggest installing all the Japanese fonts, and printer drivers, as this ads a lot of time to your install. Once you’ve selected the things you need, hit next, and watch the installer do it’s thing.

The entire install took me about 15 mins. And I was booted up in OSX86. Check the other pages for details/guides on what to do after you’ve got OSX86 looking at you.
